How to Plan Your Landscape Lighting System

A magnificent home that is admired by day with its beautiful landscaping - trees, shrubs, flower gardens - is transformed at night - without landscape lighting - to a dark foreboding area with small puddles of glaring light at the front door.

Why invest thousands of dollars in landscaping only to have it disappear at night when you are at home. After all, most of us are away from home all day and it's night time when we want to enjoy our home and grounds.

The techniques shown here are used by landscape lighting designers to dramatize the home and grounds at night and then turn them into a warm, inviting atmosphere.

 Step / Safety Lighting

Place lower wattage lights with overlapping pools of light for beauty, safety, and to illuminate the steps to provide adequate lighting for sure footing.

 Shadowing

Place the light in front of the object projecting its shadow on a wall, or hang fixtures in large trees casting images onto the ground.

 Uplighting

Place one or two accent lights directly under a large tree or within a few inches of a stone wall to create contrasting highlights and shadows.

 Downlighting or Moonlighting

Downlighting imitates natural moonlight and is very dramatic when halogen spots are used. Contrasting highlights and shadows on large trees, statues, and stone walls create handsome focal points to your landscaping.
