How to Plan Your Landscape Lighting

Focal Points - Decide what the center of attraction will be; a large tree, statue, fountain, etc. Choose no more than two focal points and use the remaining light as accents. Do not over light. A little goes a long way.

Lighting Effects - Plan what lighting effects you want to achieve from the photographs shown here. Be creative in using and mixing various lighting techniques for drama and excitement.

Safety and Security - Illuminate dark areas along walkways and steps.

Helpful Hints:

Large Trees - Illuminate with several light sources from top to bottom (Uplight and/or Downlight).

Shrubs - Most shrubs are more attractive when illuminated from above, hiding the unattractive parts of the bush in the shadows.

Flowers and Ground Coverings - Illuminate from above, unless it has an unusual shape or texture, then consider silhouetting or grazing.

 Path / Safety Lighting

Use lower wattage lights positioned close to the path with overlapping pools of light for beauty, safety, and to provide adequate lighting for sure footing.

 Security Lighting

Illuminate dark areas all around your home, especially at windows and doors to discourage prowlers.

 Backlighting or Silhouetting

Place light between objects and walls. When wall is washed with light the object will be contrast with it. The same effect in nature is trees on a high ridge at dusk.

 Grazing

Position the light source close to the object allowing the light to skim across the surface to accentuate textured areas with highlights and shadows.
